Mobile Phone Camera Modules to Reap Triple-Digit Growth in 2004
June 23, 2004
- Taiwanese mobile phone camera module shipments are expected to reach approximately 73 million units in 2004. Growing 5.5-fold from 13 million units in 2003, Taiwanese camera modules are forecasted to comprise 40% of the global market. Growth will be driven by capacity expansions and the arrival of aggressive new entrants to serve warmer global demand. A more robust supply chain will also feed volume gains.

Built-in camera modules are anticipated to account for roughly 90% of Taiwanese shipments in 2004, compared to about 60% in 2003. Attachment modules comprised roughly 40% of 2003 volume.

1.3MP (Megapixel) CMOS (Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor) camera modules have already hit mass production in the second quarter of 2004. Modules of this resolution are forecasted to account for approximately 25% of total Taiwanese shipments in 2004.

For 2003 VGA (Video Graphics Array) comprised about 90%, as most makers have entered the segment by producing this specification. CIF (Common Intermediate Format) accounted for the remainder.
